Ready for Rollercoasters

At our tournament this weekend another one of my students qualified for Nationals. It will be held in Dallas this summer and the open ceremony will be at six flags! That means I will get to ride some coasters this summer. I am very ready for a break though. I will be gone again this weekend. I'm going to Austin for the UIL state speech competition. I am not sure how I'm making it right now. My house is in such a state of disgust. I really need a couple of days off to get it clean. Luckily, there's only a few more weeks of school left. I am so ready for a break. Well, it's time to go to bed so I can go to work in the morning.

I'm always exhausted after I read your posts. Ha! I know you're the speech teacher for the school, but, does that position require you to go on all these trips? Or did you volunteer for the position as coach? Do they pay you as they do all the sports coaches?

Yes, I am basically required to go on all the trips and I am finally getting a stipend, but it isn't very much. My paycheck is about $25 more a month with the stipend... woo hoo. I only wish I got paid like the sports coaches. I think I should because honestly, the things that my kids are learning by going to speech tournaments are going to help them far more than sports.... no offense to coaches, but it really is true. There will be more scholarship money available based on this type of competition than there will be in sports. And I know that coaches have after school workouts and games on weekends... when I go to tournaments, I am gone almost the entire weekend.

They really should be paying you like a coaches salary, I think my speech coach in high school finally lobbied for that sometime after I graduated but I'm not sure what the outcome is...Here's the thing, schools are so obsessed with athletics because that makes money for the *school* because of games and concession stands and stuff...heaven forbid they care about scholarship money for students. Ugh Texas.

It's the same way here in Virginia Susan. It's so damn annoying!
